I have been doing a lot of reading lately. I read 'Oprah' by Kitty Kelley. I have watched the Oprah show for many years now and was often inspired by the work the media magnate does on the show. Reading this biography was quite an eye-opener. Here is a woman who cannot commit telling the whole world to Live their Best Life. She is not married nor does she have a family but her shows give relationship advice and tips on raising your child. After reading the book, I was wondering here is this woman who interviews people, celebrities and never shies away from asking all the questions but she refuses to divulge who her real father is.Anyways, I still watch the show but don't feel the same way.
The book I am currently reading is 'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks' by Rebecca Skloot. This book is amazing. It is the story of Henrietta Lacks whose cells were taken without her or her family's consent. These cells called HeLa cells have been multiplied in a lab and have been used in research. well, you might be thinking thats a good thing....yes and no. Henrietta's cells have been used to find vaccines for Polio and other diseases...vaccines we are benefiting from...here comes the shocking part...Henrietta was a black woman. She was confined to a 'coloured' ward. her family did not know that these cells were taken from her body & used for research. The Hela cells were sold for $ 25-50 per vial. Her family cannot even afford to go to the doctor and they were not compensated for the cells that were taken. This book is a true story..so if you like non-fiction this is a must read. Happy reading !!!

About Oprah not being open about her own life, is subjective. She doesn't necessarily have to be open about her personal life with the entire world. As long as she isn't giving incorrect info, I think it is ok. At the end of the day, she is providing some service to many across the world.
ReplyDeleteAbout not committing, not married and no kids - I think it is in correct for any of us to point fingers. Just because a person isn't married or chooses not to have kids, doesn't mean we should question them on that. It's just that marriage and having kids is considered 'normal'. If you do otherwise, everyone begins to think something's wrong. These are just stereotypes set by society. If Oprah chooses to not reveal who her father is, or chooses not to marry or have kids, it is her choice, her personal life.
Vaish, I continue to watch the Oprah Show and admire the work she does. She is now doing a campaign called the No Phone Zone which is a campaign to stop people from Texting or Talking on their cellphone while driving. I have mentioned very little of the book but there is so much which makes me wonder who she really is. She makes every employee sign a Confidentiality Agreement which means they cannot talk about her, her business or give interviews about her during and after their employment at Harpo Productions. She has also mentioned that each tear drop is worth 1 TRP and that she can cry on cue.
ReplyDeleteAlso I read another book 'Living Oprah' by Robyn Okrant. Robyn followed the Oprah show for 1 year and did everything that Oprah tells her audiences to do like buying a product or a book, clothes, etc. During the year she followed Oprah, she also went to the show as an audience member and has mentioned in the book that Oprah never spends any time with the audience. She comes on the set after everybody has been prepped.
Anyway, too many things to mention..I think my response to you might be longer than the blog itself.
